AARAKSHAN - A Father's perpective

"AARAKSHAN" -   A BIG issue during our college and school days. I remember the days when "Rajiv Goswami" had gone for self immolation at the age of 19 against V.P Singh's implementation of Mandal comission recommendations for reservation.

I also played my bit by protesting against it as a head of Bajrang dal for my college.

After years the same issue clicked to my mind looking at reviews of to be released movie of big B with the name "AARAKSHAN". It forced me to rethink that, reservation is really a bad word.

Being young, we never apply much of a logic .But assess things looking at our benefit. After studying for 13-15 hours a day and getting 85-90%, we can't get admission to medical or engineering college whereas these people from reservation class gets admission even at 34% (Which are passing marks) and the funny thing is inspite of that the seats remain vacant in that category. We felt it is just a way for the government to secure their vote bank.

But, today being a part of a financial planning industry for more than 10 years, I come across different kind of investors from different classes with different needs. The one thing common amongst them is every one wants to give best education, infrastructure and facilities to their kids.

They get them admitted to best schools, will stand whole day to enroll them to coaching classes, make there study area perfect, provide costliest stationery, branded pens, best of food or a 2 wheeler - so that they can comfortable commute between coaching classes and school, clothing or everything for that matter is available at their disposal. If they ask for any thing related to studies, parents get them however costly they are. During these period they live a prince life.

But, when I thought of so called reserved class in this context, it changed my views about "AARAKSHAN".

Even, after working for whole day they are hardly able to take care of their livelihood in this inflationary period. However, they manage to study in a street light or a single bulb in the whole room, by having the minimal stationery or books and without any access to coaching class. The only thing which they get is government school (condition of which we know very well) or schools run by Trusts - Even they have became a money making machine and if there are some good ones left, they are always lack of funds to provide the best education.

Inspite of all the hurdles, if that child is able to continue his study and scores 45 to 50%, It means more than a distinction for him. He should for sure be given priority or motivation to continue the same and strive a better life in future.

Even thinking from social aspect, if we will not try to uplift them by providing certain reservation today, the difference will grow more and more with every passing day. The days are not far that instead of asking for food they will snatch it from us.

I quote "No one is born criminal, but the hunger makes a thief of any man " or "Poverty is the mother of Crime".Unquote

If we wish to live our life with security and comfort, we should try to help them by providing the environment and basic infrastructure, so that they can also grow with us. By compromising one hotel visit or a movie in a year we can help a child to pay his school fees for the whole year.

I wish while making a financial plan every one should set aside some portion of investments towards philanthropy to make the world a better place to live.

  1. Wonderful piece of writing. Yes,i too am in favour of reservation, but the criterion should not be cast, rather, it should be on financial ground. As i believe that a poor even form brahmin family is equally under previlaged. Moreover, who all people of general category complain about not getting admission due to reservaiton do not have a very valid ground, as even if we remove reservaiton, the cut off will reduce from 85 to say 84% not to 70% for any admission. Govt has done good job by creating infrastructure and libralising economy by allowing to open colleges and professional institutes. Having said this, i suggest to all concerned to give additional support to these persons coming from reserved category to understand higher educaiton in a better way and even if there is difference in them and general category student during admission to any cource, there should be negligible difference when both of them pass out. Then only they will be able to justify need of their jobs and become good citizen. Last but not least, I am in strong opposition of providing reservation benifits to cream layer of any cast. There is no point in giving advantage of reservaiton to ward of a bank manager or PWD engineer ot class one officer on name of cast. Such cases are eating away advantages which should have gone to under previlages.

  2. Very good article and thoughts... but I am not in favor of reservation due to....

    (1) Our country already divided in to state (just think logically, emotionaly and politically, Like Bihari in Mumbai) and also divided into sub-state (like Saurastra-Gujarat-Kutch and like Tilangana-Andhra Pradesh). Now due to reservation our country also divide into castwise (like SC-ST, Reververed - Non-reserverd, BC-Buxi, and so many more)... and coming days any cast peoples go for protest and demand for reservation for their cast (in past before one years gujar community did protest and demand for reservation in Rajasthan)

    (2) Due to reservation our country loss so many revenue for creating good quality of Doctors, enggers and administrators... because reserved seat was not occupied by qualified persons... (here I give one example of my friend's brother who got the admision in medical on the basis of reservation before 11 years ago. he got around 70% in 12th. He did not pass out from medical and he left after 5 years. in this case government loss revernue of around more than 30 lacs.)

Here I suggest for Scholarship rather than Reservation. Government and other NGO or Trust give the scholarship to those students, who are briliant but they have not afford fees and basic required facility for study. Here I give one of the best example of Schalorship for that what scholarship give our country, which is not possible in the form of Reservation... example of Forever Greatest Barodian Maharaja Sayajio Rao, who gave scholarship to Dr. Bhimrav Ambedkar...

Think logically and in rational way, which is better Scholarship or Reservation....

    1. Appreciate your comments.

We are already divided by state, language and religion rather within the category lot of sub and sub categories but that doesn't hold a valid logic for not providing reservation. It is not the reservation which is dividing us, but its politics. So we need to stop them by doing so.

Financial benefit will not help them as firstly they need money for food and if they get it they would spend it on that. Regarding scholarship good suggestion but it limits to only brilliant students, what about not so good.

Lastly, like I mentioned it is a father's perspective for me a person under reserved category gets 40-50% without any proper education, infrastructure or access to information is as good as my son getting 90%+. Might be my son will not get admission to engg. or medical colleges inspite of good percentage but it is a big step to remove social imbalance.
